Kansas Legislature Passes Discriminatory Anti-Muslim Bill By Calling It A ‘Women’s Rights’ Issue
May 14, 2012Last week, the Kansas Senate became the latest state to enact a discriminatory measure against Muslims in America by passing a so-called Sharia ban. The bill goes before Gov. Sam Brownback (R-KS), who has not indicated whethere he will sign or veto it.
Oklahoma passed a Sharia ban by ballot in 2010, but that measure has been deemed facially unconstitutional by the courts because it specifically targets Muslims for discrimination. Because of Oklahoma’s experience, state legislatures are moving bills that are more oblique about their discriminatory intent. South Dakota, Louisiana, Arizona, and Tennessee have all passed laws that ban “foreign law in American courts” and don’t mention Muslims or Sharia by name.

Temple University protest versus anti-Muslim bigots
May 8, 2012[on Liberation by Walter Smolarek] On April 23, a collection of racist, anti-Muslim forces intended to hold what they titled an “Islamic Apartheid Conference” hosted by the equally absurdly named Students for Intellectual Freedom at Temple University in Philadelphia. Instead, they were met with a militant counter-protest many times the size of their audience.

Muslim Group Leader to NYPD: Thanks For Spying On Us
March 20, 2012In early March, members of a Muslim group gathered for a press conference at Manhattan’s One Police Plaza to send a clear message to the New York City Police Department about its controversial surveillance program targeting Muslim Americans.
That message was: Thanks for spying on us.
“We are not here to criticize the NYPD,” declared Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, founder and president of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD), who was joined by House Homeland Security chairman Peter King (R-N.Y.), “but rather to thank them for doing the work that we as Muslims should be doing, which is monitoring extremism, following extremism, and helping counter the ideologies that create radicalization in our communities.”

Allen Krause dies at 72; rabbi was trailblazer in O.C.’s interfaith movement
March 12, 2012[LA Times] At Mission San Juan Capistrano, founded centuries ago to spread the Christian faith, Rabbi Allen Krause started an annual interfaith conference in 1994 because he felt that Orange County’s religious groups were too insular.
About 600 people attended the first Religious Diversity Faire, with spiritual leaders from more than a dozen faiths holding workshops on their beliefs and practices. The event was staged for 15 more years.
Providing a window into the religious beliefs of others was a recurring theme for Krause, who was recognized as a trailblazer in the county’s interfaith movement.
“I’m sure most of us have never seen a Muslim worship service,” he said at the first conference, where he shared his Jewish customs. “If we could just see into one, we could get to understand one another better, and thereby appreciate each other more.”

Making An Exercise Space for Muslim Women
February 14, 2012[WAMU, Jonna McKone] Hadil Alyamani, a Yemeni Muslim-American in her 20s, teaches Zumba a few nights a week at a Northern Virginia community, arts and fitness center called the Nur Center. The Latin-inspired dance class is all women, and draws a diverse crowd, including non-Muslims.
For many Muslim women who wear a hijab or scarf to cover their hair and neck, the privacy of an all-female setting in which to workout is important, given their standards for modesty.

Obama proposes $800 million in aid for “Arab Spring”
February 13, 2012(Reuters) – The White House announced plans on Monday to help “Arab Spring” countries swept by revolutions with more than $800 million in economic aid, while maintaining U.S. military aid to Egypt.
In his annual budget message to Congress, President Barack Obama asked that military aid to Egypt be kept at the level of recent years — $1.3 billion — despite a crisis triggered by an Egyptian probe targeting American democracy activists.
The proposals are part of Obama’s budget request for fiscal year 2013, which begins October 1. His requests need the approval of Congress, where some lawmakers want to cut overseas spending to address U.S. budget shortfalls and are particularly angry at Egypt.

Arab Spring turns one year old
January 25, 2012[Wired Danger Room] The revolt that started a year ago today in Egypt was spread by Twitter and YouTube, or so the popular conception goes. But a group of Navy-backed researchers has a more controversial thesis: Egyptians were infected by the idea of overthrowing their dictator.
And now, these researchers claim, they’re getting close to developing tools that can track the spread of infections like these.
With funding from the Office of Naval Research, a team at Aptima, Inc. is developing software that’d do more than just scan Twitter for trending topics. Instead, it’d mine the web, including news stories, social networks and blogs, to extract topics and phrases that are gaining traction online. Then, the software would keep tabs on how the conversations proliferate, both geographically and over time.

Bloomberg blasts use of movie during NYPD training
January 25, 2012[Associated Press] NEW YORK — Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday that New York police used “terrible judgment” in showing counterterrorism trainees a documentary-style film that says Muslim extremists are masquerading as moderates to destroy America from within.
Bloomberg said police have stopped showing officers “The Third Jihad,” a 72-minute movie that has been branded inflammatory by some Muslim organizations and was produced by a conservative group called the Clarion Fund.
“Somebody exercised some terrible judgment,” he said in Albany, the state capital. “As soon as they found out about it, they stopped it.”
